Help > General Rules to Follow
Is it Suitable?
Formal, semi formal, business casual...what
does it mean? At the Colony clothing company
we are often asked this question.
General Rules to Follow:
-
When the
invitation reads "Black Tie", it is
strictly a formal function and no less
than a tuxedo with the appropriate
accessories is acceptable.
-
"Black Tie
Optional", a tuxedo may be worn or as an
alternative a dark suit (either black or
dark blue) with a white dress shirt and
an appropriate tie is expected.
-
In neither
of the above situations should a blazer
or sports jacket with contrast pants be
worn.
-
An
invitation requesting "Business Dress",
one has more latitude. A suit, sports
jacket and pant, or blazer and pant
combination with a colored shirt and
matching tie is appropriate.
-
There is a
big difference between "Business Dress"
and "Business Casual". With "Business
Casual" an open collar sports shirt, a
Mock neck top or knit shirt is fully
acceptable. However, contrary to popular
belief, denim jeans, khaki casuals and
shorts are not business casuals.
-
"Patio Wear" is cool and
comfortable, golf slacks worn with knit
tops, sports shirts and sweaters (or
walking shorts depending on the weather)
